This is an astoundingly good museum. There is so much knowledge accumulated here and they do a great job of presenting it without going academic. They have good challenges for kids too. I've been several times and taken a range of people there. It's a great insite to past lifestyles, local coal mining, geology, railways and canals.

My husband and I loved this little museum and spent an enjoyable morning looking at the exhibits. It encompasses more than just the local coal mines. The living conditions of the miners and their families are covered in detail. It also depicts the trades associated with mining. All in all a very pleasant experience and cheap too.(£6 each for yearly ticket). Our only regret being the cafe was closed, could have murdered a coffee at the end of our visit. We will be returning. Visited just over a hour before closing so couldn't get to spend to much time looking at everything so will be returning as tickets are valid for 1 year.
As I arrived I got my ticket and entered the museum wear I was greeted by a really friendly member of staff who told me a bit about the museum and what they have on display and wear each display is.
There is everything from the history of printing, mineing and iron working there is even a little shop showing what you would have found in one and how things looked which is really interesting to see compaird to how things look now.
This is a great museum with lots to see and able to learn so much from here.
This museum had a café and small shop.
There is toilets here.
There is step free access to the museum but from what I could see it's only to the ground floor.
I really hope to return very soon and spend more time looking around.

It is a real shame that despite a large area of unobstructed south facing roof the museum has no solar panels. It would be a nice narrative for a coal field museum to demonstrate the transition from dirty fossil fuel to clean renewable.
