Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

The Fraunhoferν Gesellschaft e.V. (Fraunhofer) is the organization for institutes of applied research in Germany, undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government. In this project, Fraunhofer Fokus is involved. Fraunhofer Fokus ( is the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems. Located in Berlin, Fraunhofer FOKUS has a track record of over 20 years research and development of communication and integration solutions in the fields of telecommunications, automotive, eGovernment, software development, and emergency services. It researches and develops demand-oriented solutions for industry, contract research and public administration in the area of:

- Civil security, public Alerting and social media

- Consultancy for the public authorities in the context of security and safety

- Data science

- Architectures and protocols for future communication networks and platforms

- Interactive technologies for individual and community-type applications

- Cloud based services

The role of Fraunhofer in the project will be:

Fraunhofer Fokus, with its long and rich experience in security, virtual network functions, and smart cities will bring to the FORTIKA project a lightweight virtual security appliance that can be used in particular in Fog computing. This appliance will offer at least a combination of two security technologies, firewalling and intrusion detection system. In fact, Fraunhofer Fokus started working on virtual security appliances in the context of the FP7 T-NOVA project where a virtual network function is offered to protect the network and the resources in the context of clouds. Fraunhofer Fokus will take the burden of extending and accommodating this network function to FORTIKA requirements, in particular interfacing it with the FPGA.This appliance will also be extended to deal with privacy protection issues. Fraunhofer will be the innovation manager of FORTIKA.
