Wonderful, everything that a community heritage centre should be. Eclectic, but carefully curated, local memorabilia. Passionate and well-informed staff.

Heysham is certainly a picturesque village and a visit to the Heritage Centre will make you appreciate it all-the-more. Located in the centre of the old part of the village, Heysham Heritage Centre is housed in a seventeenth century barn and good use has been made of the limited space within.

This is not a place where you will spend much time, although you get the feeling that the friendly and knowledgeable staff would happily chat to you for as long as you want to stay. The modern display boards provide the visitor with a wealth of information about the local area and its history and there are a number of interesting artefacts too, including an impressive cannon from a 1903 shipwreck.

No museum of this type would be complete without a little shop and this one is well stocked with various gifts, and a good variety of publications that will teach you more about Heysham and its environs.

The centre itself is easy to find, a few yards from a large pay and display carpark which will cost you only a pound for up to four hours; you will also find free toilets here which is something of a rarity these days. There is plenty to explore within walking distance, including the ruins of an eighth-century chapel and a sandy beach, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy a cream-tea or an ice cream.

Be sure to sign the visitors' book and make a small donation to help keep this lovely little gem open.
